My dearest deep sea creature,

Swollen and confused.

Your pale pink cheeks and permanent frown have become characteristic of you and your siblings alike. Your skin is like that of a raw chicken thigh, slimy and unappetising. Looking at you, you are without the rise and fall of my cheekbones, the structured pout of my lips, the subtle dive in my cupids bow, my evenly spaced eyes that are seated with intention above my tear troughs. Your two beady eyes instead, stare pointlessly into mine, your swollen mouth downturned and shining. Your fins like superfluous protrusions affixed to your otherworldly form. Without the pressure of the deep seas what is it that you have become?

Sensationalised by misunderstanding,

forced into the wrong place

We were never meant to meet

I was never meant to see you like this

You were forced into conditions that were not your own

And have changed into something unsightly

and I judge you for it

My dearest deep sea creature

But once structured and undisturbed

Your long bodied frame

That once shone like graphite

Moved slowly through deep dark waters

Your pupils once poised and full of intent

Scanned your surroundings

Dark and familiar

Who am I to judge you

knowing what you truly are

I have isolated you from your brethren

And taken your sustenance

And now I berate your changed form

As if that is all you are

And all you can be

My invasive hands and prying eyes

You slip through my fingers

Slimy as you are

Back into your habitat

But permanently changed

Unrecognizable
